Please use this forum as a meeting place to discuss anything related to the SoapBox project in Uganda.
We feel this is a great way to get to know others who are participating in this project in 2006 and to draw from the experience of those who have already been previously.
We would expect some participation here from our Project Partners but their access to the Internet may not be as readily available as ours.

Hello! I've been with the last three SoapBox teams working in Uganda and spent the past 14 months living out there. Please consider this project, its so much fun and it makes such a huge impact on the community. We've had crusades, outreach work, childrens work, building... but we also have a lot of fun getting alongside the Church. We have fellowship every day which really encourages us and i learn so much and have grown more than i ever thought possible. We also enjoy dancing, singing, acting... and it doesnt matter whether you are any good or not, its all about having a good time and getting to know one another.
The pastor is called Pastor Peter and hes wonderful and has two young children. There are so many youth ready to befriend you and so so many children ready to just play with you. The accomodation is fantastic and in a beautiful setting. Its definately worthwhile, it'll change you and touch you more than you can ever imagine, like all other soap box projects! I had the most amazing opportunity to see the Church grow each year as a new team come, and watch it develop with new buildings, new floors, new paintings.... the community wait eagerly each year to see you all.

p.s ALL SOAPBOXERS- Pastor Peters wife has given birth!!! They've had a beautiful little girl called Priscilla Karibo (meaing "gift") born last thursday. Mamy is doing well and Pastor sends his greetings to all. Roy is now nearly 7 years and Precious is 3. (for those of you who dont know, Pastor Peter is the senior Pastor at Nakawa Baptist church, the project in uganda).
Just wondering, I now have enough money to cover the costs of the trip and was wondering what to do with any extra that I'm given. Is there anything I can buy and take out with me for the project/church?

Hi Frances, The best thing to do is to send any extra money into the office and ask that it goes to the Uganda project. Your team leaders will then take the money out with them to help pay for the material you use while on the project. We will let team members know at the Orientation weekend of any specific items the team can take out with them as suggested by our Uganda Project Partner. We are also very grateful for any extra money to go into our general project fund. This can then be used to help the projects that are short of finance and enable us to carry on the work of Soapbox. Maybe you could put some ideas on the website about how you fundraised your money? Because i know some people find it quite hard and that would be a real blessing.
Thanks for the advice guys, that's great Actually I got most of my money from writing letters off to various trust funds! I tried to focus on those that are particularly interested in young people and/or overseas work/travel. If it helps, here's the website I used:

I am going on the Uganda 2 (Jinja) trip this summer. I have been on that ace site you mentioned, but I don't seem to be having any luck, could someone give me an example of which one I should try applying to.
Ummm...let's see, I did this last year so things could have changed by now! But one that helped a lot was the Gordon Foundation (reg. charity no. 1054934). What I did was searched the site for charities that mentioned one or a combinations of travel, christianity, youth, etc. and I had to trawl through a lot of irrelevant stuff but it was worth it in the end. I picked the Gordon foundation as it mentioned music too (something I do a bit of) and wrote them a pleading letter saying that I played instruments, wanted to go on a charity trip, learn lots, needed money etc. etc. (basically made verbal puppy-dog eyes at them) and they were generous in return! I can't vouch for its success but it might be worth a try.
